Poll: What smartphone do you use daily?

by Mike Macias 05.28.2011 Opinion
Thumbnail image for Poll: What smartphone do you use daily?

I’m curious to see what phone all of the readers here at Symbian Fanatics use daily. Have you moved on to Android or iOS? Are you still using a older, yet reliable S60v3 device like the Nokia E71 or N82? Maybe the Nokia 5800 still does what you need. Many have made the jump to Symbian^3 with the Nokia N8, E7, or C7 Astound. Maybe you carry two phones with you all the time! Since I intended this poll for the Symbian Fanatics audience I’ve included three versions of Symbian in the choices along with the other big smartphone brands. Still vote even if you’re not a Symbian Fanatics reader! Whatever your main device is let me know in the quick poll below!

If there is anything Nokia has done right when it comes to Symbian lately it comes from the Beta Labs team. They recently brought us two great applications in Nokia Sleeping Screen and Bubbles. Both are great utilities that help to make the device more useful when asleep and locked. Today Nokia Bubbles has been updated with some major fixes and a few new features.

Thumbnail image for Get 90 app shortcuts on your Symbian homescreen or 255 total with Favorite Apps

Necessary? Not really. Possible? Absolutely – thanks to a new widget available in the Ovi Store called Favorite Apps. This widget is similar to the default Favorites widget found on Symbian^3 devices like the Nokia N8 but has a twist. With Favorite Apps by Nokia you can make one widget hold 3 shortcuts in plain view then extend to 12 more with a touch. This means you can have a total of 90 shortcuts on one homescreen or 255 total! Watch this video demonstration I made with my N8 to get a full understanding…

Photo Showcase: Long Beach harbor sunrise with the Nokia N8

The Nokia N8 never ceases to amaze me with awesome photos in all lighting conditions. As many of you know I’m a part time longshoreman at the Port of LA/Long Beach and I love snapping photos of all the huge machinery and ocean backdrop on my lunch breaks. We unload the cargo ships coming from overseas and load them back up before they sail. It’s a really interesting job and I love being out on the water. Two mornings ago I had to work the “hoot” shift, 3am-8am, and had a bit of time to capture the different views just before the sun came up and just after. Of course I was waiting for the sun to crack the horizon but it didn’t happen until just minutes after it was .....

Blue Shine – A great Symbian theme for Nokia E71, E72, S60v3 Eseries devices

Thumbnail image for Blue Shine – A great Symbian theme for Nokia E71, E72, S60v3 Eseries devices

After writing about the Nokia E6 a few weeks ago I realized there are still plenty of E71 and E72 users who probably feel neglected in the smartphone community since the focus now is on newer touchscreen smartphones with high-end specs and big screens. Today I’ll show you a theme that really caught my eye, made especially for S60v3 Eseries devices. I’ll be using the E72 starting later this week for a small experiment I’m doing, which I’ll discuss at the end of this article. For now check out Blue Shine by Mandeep.

Finally priced right? Nokia E7 under $500, N8 under $400

by Mike Macias 04.30.2011 News
Thumbnail image for Finally priced right? Nokia E7 under $500, N8 under $400

If Nokia wants to sell 50 million Symbian smartphones in the next few years it is well known they’d have to get more competitive in terms of pricing and availability. It looks like they finally realized that and have slashed the price of their two top phones on Amazon. The Nokia E7 has taken a dramatic price decrease and can now be purchased for $489.99 shipped and the N8 for $389.99. The green N8 can be acquired for $349.99 on Amazon right now! That’s one of the best deals I’ve seen for a Nokia smartphone. I recently got my hands on the green N8 and it has quickly become my second favorite color in the N8 family. Nokia N8 green unlocked – $349.99 Nokia E7 unlocked – $489.99 Prices subject .....

App Review: Sports Tracker for Symbian smartphones

by Alvin Wong 04.25.2011 Symbian Apps
Thumbnail image for App Review: Sports Tracker for Symbian smartphones

Sports Tracker is a rather well-known Symbian app that has existed for several years now. Originally a Nokia Beta Labs project, its developers have since spun it out of Nokia and formed an independent company, Sports Tracking Technologies, around this app. As the name suggests, Sports Tracker is an app that relies on GPS and helps you track, manage, analyze and share your workouts, essentially turning your Symbian device into a connected sports computer. I decided that the best way to review such an app would be to use Sports Tracker on an actual workout. Hence, I grabbed my bike and got going one early morning when the sky was still dark.

App Review: Podcatcher for Symbian

by Alvin Wong 04.17.2011 Symbian Apps
Thumbnail image for App Review: Podcatcher for Symbian

Podcatcher by Sebastian Brannstrom, as the name suggests, is an app that allows you to subscribe to podcasts and listen to them on your S60v3, Symbian^1 or Symbian^3 smartphone. Although certain Symbian devices such as my Nokia E5 already come with a podcatcher known as Nokia Podcasting built in, I’d still wholeheartedly recommend using Podcatcher instead. Read on to find out why.
